About Andrew Hocking Photography

I’m Andrew, a “landscape photographer” based in Cornwall – and I often visit South Wales.

I take photos, first and foremost, of subjects and in a style that interests me. I believe that this is important in order to bring out the best in my work. Maybe that’s why my images often tend look less like tourist board photos and more moody & engaging – well at least that’s my aim!

Early morning is my favourite time of day – when locations are peaceful and devoid of people. Sometimes, when on location in the early morning or late evening I’m rewarded with warm sunlight that saturates the scene with rich colour and soft, long shadows to define shapes.

While in Cornwall, I’m drawn to the coast. The ever changing conditions of the tide and weather make for different images every time i visit a location. Sometimes calm & peaceful and sometimes wild & violent. On occasions when the coastal conditions aren’t right for me, I switch to photographing Cornwall’s inland scenery – such as the woodlands and occasionally the moors.

When I’m in South Wales, I’m drawn to the mountainous landscapes of the Brecon Beacons – and the lakes, woods and waterfalls within. South Wales also has some beautiful coastline. I find the geological and man made coastal features very different to those back home – which I’m keen to explore when I visit.

I’ve always been “arty!” I began my career with a qualification in graphic design. After a few years as trainee through to assistant project roof truss designer, my employer created a marketing department where I’d begin a 13 year stretch in graphic design, 3D CAD animation and marketing – while I also dabbled in freelance graphics. Since 2017 though, I’ve worked for a builders’ merchant – which has allowed me to focus all my creativity on my photography.

In 2012, I bought my first “proper camera” – a used Lumix G1 Micro Four Thirds. The sole intention for this camera was to photograph my printed designs for my freelance design website. Before long, a friend and keen hobbyist photographer suggested we take our cameras out to photograph the Cornish fishing village of Mevagissey. From then, I was hooked! A couple of upgrades later, I’ve progressed to using a Canon 6D MkII full frame camera since May 2018.

"ST IVES SUNRISE [ICM]" 12x8 Mounted Print (16x12 mount)

📌 St Ives Bay, Cornwall ABOUT THE PHOTO Having checked the tide times, weather and sunrise trajectory, I had a specific shot in mind when I arrived at St Ives early in the morning. But... I left a small but crucial bit of kit at home... my tripod connector plate! This meant that a slow shutter image of the waves swooshing around the old pier stumps was out As the sun rose, the horizon lit up in a warm glow. Instead of packing up and going home - I decided to embrace the blur with some ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) photography. With a slow shutter speed of just under a second, I moved the camera during the exposure for this "arty" look. I made several attempts - selecting this one to process first as I liked how some of the buildings (possibly engine houses?) are just about visible on the horizon. "DOCKS AT DUSK II" 12x8 Mounted Print (16x12 mount)

📌 Falmouth Docks, Cornwall ABOUT THE PHOTO With a clear sky and not wanting to drive too far under lockdown, there was only one place to end my daily walk - Castle Drive overlooking Falmouth Docks for "Blue Hour." This photo was taken around 20 minutes after sunset, while the sky still glowed. The dockyard switched on the lights in their buildings moments before, which added luminance to the foreground. I composed the image with the dominant crane appearing to point towards the lit-up superstructure structure of a docked ship - I assume built for piling. The composition was achieved by fully extending my tripod, including centre column, and narrowing the legs to gain enough elevation to clear the railings. "COASTPATH" 12x8 Mounted Print (16x12 mount)

📌 Holywell Bay, Cornwall ABOUT THE PHOTO This is what I believe could be an old footpath in Holywell Bay's sand dunes - which have shifted over time to leave the structure hanging off the side of a dune. The dune was much steeper than it looks here - so I didn't attempt to physically tidy the scene (charcoal on the ledge and netting underneath it) as I could well have taken a tumble with my camera gear. So, with just a little tidying of the net in Photoshop, the scene is pretty much as it was. In order to get everything sharp from front to back, I tried focus stacking for the first time. Three shots with the focus on different focal planes into the image were blended in Photoshop.
