About Art by James Barker

I am a traditional artist who tries to view things in a unique and less traditional way.
Cornwall inspires most of my work. Its natural beauty, history and its people all influence my work.
A love of the sea, and especially waves, has lead me to creating the Cornish Great Waves Series. These take the classic Japanese woodblock image and reimagine it in a modern Cornish Landscape. Japanese culture fascinates me, and when I am not painting Cornwall I sometimes paint (and grow) Bonsai trees.
My home studio is in the heart of Cornwall.

Cornish Great Waves - St Antony's Lighthouse

St. Anthony's Lighthouse, near Falmouth. Cornish Great Wave. Signed Original Artwork. Homage to Hokusai's Great Wave. Surf Art, Watercolour Painting. I created 'Lighthouse Under the Great Wave On the Coast of Cornwall' in the Japanese Woodblock print style, but using watercolour and Ink. For over 35 years I have enjoyed watching or being in the waves of Cornwall, as they crash in from the Atlantic. I would see this lighthouse on many a Saturday morning as a child, watching TV. It was the location of the magical Fraggle Rock! 300 gsm (140lb) Watercolour Paper. 10 x 15 inches, Roughly Tabloid/Ledger size. Completed freehand working from memory, sketches and photos.
